It Could Happen to You! |

In this new column, SLAI staff recalls member-support interactions that could have been prevented or solved with resources that can be overlooked or forgotten by our membership. These mistakes can happen to anyone! Use these scenarios to review your operating protocols and proactively prevent similar problems.
SLAI was contacted by ‘Member Company A’ regarding a system override to return a premium payment on an old policy that had actually been filed by another member organization, ‘Member Company B’. This resulted from a Broker of Record (BOR) situation where Member Company A had acquired an account from Member Company B and took on the responsibility of all future filings.
Despite extensive searching, SLAI staff was unable to find any record of the policy. Eventually, we reached out to our contact at Member Company B to ask for details about that particular policy filing.
The response immediately explained the absence in our records. Member Company B had followed NRRA guidelines, determined the home state to be Michigan, and filed the policy in that state several years earlier. The policy had never been an Illinois risk at any time, and would not have been filed with SLAI.
While it may feel uncomfortable or humbling, proper research on transferred accounts can require directly contacting the original service provider or the client themselves. For more information on policies and protocols, visit the newly revamped SLAI.org.
